Lakeland fights off consistency issues to topple Lorain, 3-1

ELYRIA, Ohio – Lakeland Community College volleyball was able to fight off consistency issues and still pull out a 3-1 victory over Lorain County Community College by the score 25-21, 25-22, 21-25 and 25-19 Wednesday evening.

With the win, the Lakers improve to 6-7 overall but most importantly improve to 4-1 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference.

Iesha Niciu led the way for Lakeland with 14 kills and 10 blocks. Morgan Smart added 10 kills and 16 assists while Cary Morin added eight kills. Caitlin Cipriano led with 24 assists while Brittney O'Hara finished with 22 digs.

Lakeland started out strong with 12 kills in the opening set as Smart and Krista Curtis each had three as the Lakers grabbed the opening set 25-21. Lakeland had fewer kills in the second set with nine but three of those came from Niciu and the Lakers picked up a 2-0 lead in sets with a 25-22 win.

Problems with consistency hurt Lakeland in the third set as Lorain won 25-21 to force a fourth set. Lakeland also had nine kills in the fourth set but that and three kills from Niciu was enough to claim the match with a 25-19 victory in the fourth.

"We just need to do a better job as a team communicating and that will get better with practice," said Lauryn Mitchell, freshman middle blocker for Lakeland.

Lakeland will be back home on Saturday, Sept. 16 with a conference match against Sinclair Community College at 11 a.m.
