GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Lakeland Community College volleyball was unable to get a victory in the opening day of the Raider Challenge 2017 with losses to St. Clair County Community College and Mott Community College Saturday afternoon. 

The Lakers were swept 3-0 by St. Clair by the score 25-22, 25-15 and 25-11 and lost to Mott 3-1 by the score 25-23, 25-23, 22-25 and 25-22. With the losses, Lakeland's overall record falls to 7-11 and its Ohio Community College Athletic Conference record remains at 5-3.

Lakeland kept it close early on against St. Clair but eventually lost all three sets in the sweep. Krista Curtis led the Lakers with nine kills and four digs. Cary Morin, Iesha Niciu and Lauryn Mitchell each had five kills in the loss. Caitlin Cipriano led Lakeland with 16 assists and Brittney O'Hara led with 23 digs. 

Lakeland's best set was the opening set as the Lakers had 10 kills and scored 22 points. Niciu had four kills in the opening set but the Lakers were unable to grab any momentum in the remaining sets in the sweep. 

Mott 3 - Lakeland 1

Each set against Mott was close but Lakeland could only take the third set and fell in four to close the day with an 0-2 record. 

Lakeland will have two more matches to close out the Raider Challenge on Sunday, Oct. 1. The Lakers will open up with Kalamazoo Valley Community College at 10 a.m. and then close the tournament against Waubonsee Community College at 4 p.m.
