Lakers make quick work of visiting Hocking, 3-0

KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland Community College volleyball went right to work against Hocking College and earned a quick 3-0 sweep by the score 25-9, 25-16 and 25-16 Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Lakers improve to 12-13 overall and 7-4 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference.

Iesha Niciu led Lakeland with 16 kills and added 12 blocks for a double-double. Krista Curtis added eight kills while Cary Morin and Lauryn Mitchell each had seven kills. Caitlin Cipriano dished out 35 assists while Brittney O'Hara earned 16 digs in the sweep.

Lakeland started fast as it used a kill from Curtis for a 10-4 lead and then scored five consecutive points after that for a 15-4 lead. The Lakers only allowed four more points to Hocking as Lakeland took the first set 25-9.

The second set started out a little closer but a kill from Morin gave Lakeland a 12-8 lead. Hocking played better in the second set but it was Morgan Smart closing out the set with a kill for the 24th point and then delivered an ace to clinch the set at 25-16 to take a 2-0 lead in sets.

Hocking again came out with energy in the third set and kept it close but an ace from Allie Lister gave Lakeland a 15-11 lead. From there, the Lakers only allowed five more points as Smart delivered the match-clinching kill as Lakeland took the third 25-16 to secure the sweep.

Lakeland will have three matches at home next week, started on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. against Lorain County Community College.
