Lakeland sends off sophomores with a sweep over Edison, 3-0

KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland Community College volleyball sent off its six sophomores with an impressive 3-0 sweep over Edison Community College by the score 25-23, 25-20 and 25-22 Saturday morning.

With the win, the Lakers improved to 15-13 overall and 10-4 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play. Lakeland has now won four consecutive conference matches without dropping a set.

Iesha Niciu led the way for the Lakers with 20 kills and 17 blocks. Cary Morin added 13 kills and nine digs while Krista Curtis added 11 kills. Caitlin Cipriano finished with 34 assists and Brittney O'Hara added 29 digs in the win.

Both team split the first eight points of the match but it was Lakeland inching out to a 7-4 lead after an ace from Morgan Smart. Edison fought back to tie the game at 15-15 but it was again the serve of Smart that was used to take a 20-15 Laker lead after another ace. Morin delivered a kill for a 24-17 lead but then Edison rolled off six straight points to get within 24-23.

Morin closed out the first set with a kill to break the Edison momentum and claim the set with a 25-23 score.

Lakeland kept the momentum to start the second set as Morin delivered a kill for a 14-9 lead. The Lakers never really let Edison get much closer in the set as Lauryn Mitchell came in to earn a kill to seal the second set 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead.

Edison came out determined in the third to force a fourth set but Lakeland still way able to manage a slim 10-9 lead after a block from Niciu. The serve of Niciu helped the Lakers run off four consecutive points for a 17-12 lead. Edison tried to avoid the sweep but a kill from Curtis handed Lakeland a 25-22 victory in the third to earn the sweep in the final home game of the season.

Lakeland will next hit the road on Friday, Oct. 27 to face Edison Community College at 6 p.m.
