Lakeland’s Iesha Niciu named NJCAA player of week for Oct. 23-29

Lakeland Community College's Iesha Niciu (Ashtabula) was named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA)player of the week for games played between Oct. 23-29.

Niciu has been awarded the Ohio Community College Athletic Association (OCCAC) player of the week on three different occasions this season but this is the first national player of the week award for Niciu.

Niciu was responsible for 58 points in leading the Lakers to a pair of conference victories and helped to extend the Lakeland winning streak to six straight matches. She convert 42 kills for a .527 hitting percentage while posting 15 blocks.

Niciu opened the weekend with 23 kills and 10 digs for a double-double against Edison State Community College before coming back the next day with 19 kills and five blocks in a sweep of Clark State Community College.

Niciu finished the season with the second-most kills in Lakeland history with 414. She also led the team with 264 blocks and maintained a hitting percentage of .376 on the season.

Lakeland volleyball finished the season on Saturday, Nov. 4 with a loss in the NJCAA District E championship game to Mott Community College. The Lakers were just one set shy of earning their first-ever trip to the national tournament. Overall, Lakeland finished with a 20-15 record in a very successful season.
