Lakeland cruises in season opener against Hocking, 3-0

KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland volleyball came out strong in its season opener and swept Hocking College 3-0 by the score 25-2, 25-11, 25-2 Friday night.

With the win, the Lakers start out the year 1-0 overall and in conference.

Sophomore returner Morgan Smart (Perry) led Lakeland with 10 kills followed by seven kills by Erynn Daubenmire (Eastlake) with seven kills and 11 service aces. Charriel Bourns (Cleveland) finished with five kills and 10 service aces. Olivia Scott (Willoughby) dished out 22 assists and led the Lakers with seven digs.

Lakeland did not waste any time in the opening set and held Hocking to only two points for a 25-2 win to open the match. Hocking played better in the second set and score 11 points but the Lakers claimed the second set 25-11 to take a 2-0 lead in sets.

Lakeland finished off the sweep with a repeat performance in the final set of only allowing Hocking two points in a 25-2 victory to seal the sweep.

Lakeland will next face Sinclair Community College on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 11 a.m. for another conference match. Sinclair opened conference play with a 3-1 victory over Cuyahoga Community College on Aug. 24.
