Sinclair finishes off Lakers in four, 3-1

KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland volleyball had an early lead in each set against Sinclair Community College but the Lakers were only able to win one set in a 3-1 loss Saturday afternoon by the score of 16-25, 19-25, 25-16, 12-25.

With the loss, Lakeland finishes the weekend 1-1 overall and in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference.

Lakeland was led by Morgan Smart (Perry) in kills with 10 and she also added eight digs. Stephanie Chait (Brooklyn) added six kills while Erynn Daubenmire (Eastlake) and Charriel Bourns (Cleveland) each had four. Olivia Scott (Willoughby) dished out 23 assists and led with 15 digs.

The Lakers got off to a fast start in the opening set and jumped out to a 10-4 lead after a kill from Smart. Sinclair marched back with seven straight points to take an 11-10 lead. Lakeland held in there for a bit but Sinclair took the first set 25-16.

The second set started out the same with Lakeland taking an early 8-4 lead after an ace from McKenzie Kovach (Mentor). The Lakers hung around and tied the set at 15-15 but Sinclair pulled away for a 25-19 victory to take a 2-0 lead in sets.

Lakeland jumped out early again in the third set and held on in the latter portion of the set. Leading 21-16, Lakeland got a block from Chait and an ace from Daubenmire to force a fourth set with a 25-16 victory in the third.

Sinclair took back the momentum in the fourth set, winning 25-12 to clinch the match victory.

Lakeland will next face Cuyahoga Community College on Wednesday, August 29 at 6 p.m. for a conference match.
