Lakeland swept by Cuyahoga, 3-0

KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland volleyball put forth its best effort in the third set but the Lakers fell just short in that set as Cuyahoga held on in the third for a 3-0 sweep by the score 25-18, 25-11, 29-27 Wednesday night.

With the loss, Lakeland falls to 1-2 overall and in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference.

Morgan Smart (Perry) led the Lakers in kills with 12 and added 13 digs in the loss. Erynn Daubenmire (Eastlake) finished with nine kills and five digs. Olivia Scott (Willoughby) finished with 31 assists and led the team with 17 digs.

Lakeland traded points with Cuyahoga in the opening set as the Lakers took a 16-15 lead after a kill from Charriel Bourns (Cleveland). Lakeland would only score two more points the rest of the way as Cuyahoga took the opening set 25-18.

The second set was a rough one for Lakeland as Cuyahoga only allowed the Lakers to score 11 points in a 25-11 victory to take a 2-0 lead in sets.

Lakeland put forth its best effort in the third set, trying to force a fourth set. Points were traded back and forth until Lakeland took a 23-20 lead after hitting errors by Cuyahoga. The Lakers led 24-21 after a kill from Smart but Cuyahoga marched back to claim the third 29-27 to complete the sweep.

Lakeland will next play in the 2018 Owens Express Invitational starting on Friday, Aug. 31. The Lakers will open the tournament against Jackson College at 11:45 a.m. and then finish the day against Waubonsee Community College at 3:15 p.m.
