Lakeland loses to Oakland and Lansing to close out 2018 Owens Express Invitational

PERRYSBURG, Ohio – Lakeland had a rough go in the final day of the 2018 Owens Express Invitational after losing 3-1 to both Oakland Community College and Lansing Community College to finish the tournament 0-4.

After the pair of losses, the Lakers fall to 1-6 overall and remain 1-2 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference.

Oakland 3 – Lakeland 1

Lakeland was able to avoid a sweep by winning the third set but Oakland was able to close out the match in the fourth for the 3-1 victory by the score 25-19, 25-19, 19-25 and 25-14.

Morgan Smart (Perry) led the way with 11 kills while Erynn Daubenmire (Willoughby) added seven kills. Olivia Scott (Willoughby) dished out 24 assists and led the team with 11 digs.

Oakland jumped out early on Lakeland by claiming the first two sets by the same 25-19 score to take a 2-0 lead. Lakeland did show some fight in the third as Smart added four kills as the Lakers won the third 25-19. Oakland did regroup to win the fourth set to seal the victory.

Lansing 3 – Lakeland 1

Lakeland did almost the same thing in the second match of the day against Lansing as the Lakers dropped the first two but avoided a sweep in the third only to lose in the fourth for a 3-1 loss by the score of 25-16, 25-19, 16-25 and 25-12.

Lansing did jump out to a 2-0 lead after two sets but Lakeland did show some fight in the third. Smart added four kills in the third as Lakeland claimed a 25-16 victory to force a fourth set. Lansing closed out the match in the fourth to send the Lakers home from the tournament without a victory.

Lakeland will get back into conference play with another road trip to Perrysburg to face Owens Community College on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 6 p.m.
