KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland volleyball broke its losing streak with a 3-1 victory over Mercyhurst North East to open the Shannon Lee McBride Memorial Tournament Friday.
The Lakers did lose their second game 3-0 to Mott Community College to split the pair of games. With the split, Lakelands record moves to 2-8 overall and 1-3 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference.
Morgan Smart (Perry), Stephanie Chait (Brooklyn), McKenzie Kovach (Willoughby) and Erynn Daubenmire (Eastlake) were all awarded the McBride Memorial Scholarship during the tournament.
Lakeland 3 – Mercyhurst North East 1
Lakeland earned a much-needed win in the opening match of the tournament after beating Mercyhurst North East 3-1 by the score 25-18, 25-17, 24-26 and 25-16.
Smart dlivered 20 kills and 16 digs in the win while Daubenmire added 19 kills and 10 blocks. Charriel Bourns (Cleveland) recorded 13 kills and 21 digs while Chait added 12 kills and 13 digs. Olivia Scott dished out 64 assists in the victory.
Lakeland started fast after Bourns delivered a kill for a 14-7 lead in the first set. Daubenmire finished the set off with a kill for a 25-18 victory. The Lakers went ahead 2-0 with a 25-17 victory in the second set.
Mercyhurst showed some fight in the second set and won 26-24 but Lakeland will battle back. The Lakers battled back for momentum and claimed the fourth set 25-16 to earn a victory.
Mott 3 – Lakeland 0
Lakeland battled with Mott in each set but the Lakers were swept 3-0 by the score of 25-22, 25-17 and 25-18 to close out the day.
Smart led the team in kills with 12 and added 15 digs. Scott added 22 assists in the loss.
