KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland volleyball had momentum at times in both of its matches today but the Lakers fell to both St. Clair County Community College and Cedarville University JV by the same 3-1 score to close out the Shannon Lee McBride Memorial Tournament Saturday afternoon.
With the two losses, Lakeland falls to 2-10 overall and stay at 1-3 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play.
St. Clair County 3 – Lakeland 1
Lakeland started off well by coming back from a deficit to beat St. Clair in the first set but then St. Clair battled back to claim the following three sets to win 3-1 by the score 25-27, 25-14, 25-23 and 25-11.
Morgan Smart (Perry) led the Lakers with 15 kills and 10 digs while Erynn Daubenmire (Eastlake) also recorded double figures with 13 kills. Olivia Scott (Willoughby) handed out 32 assists and recorded 16 digs in the loss.
Lakeland may have won the first set but it did not start off well as the Lakers fell behind 24-17. Lakeland fired out seven consecutive points behind the serve of Lela Mekruit (Willoughby Hills) and late kills from Smart and Scott to tie the set at 24-24. A St. Clair hitting error allowed Lakeland to grab the first set 27-25.
St. Clair did recover to win the following three sets on its way to the 3-1 victory.
Cedarville JV 3 – Lakeland 1
Lakeland bounced back from a rough opening set to claim the second to tie the match at 1-1 but Cedarville recovered to take the final two sets for the 3-1 victory by the score 25-13, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-22.
Smart nearly hit 20 kills with 19 and she added 19 digs in the loss. Daubenmire finished with 12 kills. Charriel Bourns (Cleveland) dug out 17 balls while Scott finished with 40 assists.
Lakeland could only muster 13 points in the opening set in a loss but bounced back to narrowly take the second set 25-23. Unfortunately, that would be the final set won by the Lakers as Cedarville won the final two sets to claim the match.
Lakeland will be back in action at home for a conference game against Lorain County Community College on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m.
