GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Lakeland volleyball was able to win a set in both of its matches but lost both matches to open the 2018 Raider Challenge hosted by Grand Rapids Community College Saturday.

The Lakers lost 3-1 to Grand Rapids by the score 22-25, 25-13, 25-8 and 25-17. Lakeland later lost to Henry Ford College 3-1 by the score 25-23, 25-15, 18-25 and 25-19.

With the pair of losses, Lakeland falls to 3-15 overall and remains 2-6 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play.

Grand Rapids 3 – Lakeland 1

Lakeland started fast and took the opening set but Grand Rapids countered by winning the next three sets to claim the match.

Morgan Smart (Perry) led Lakeland with 17 kills and added 21 digs. Erynn Daubenmire (Eastlake) also reached double figures in kills with 12 and added 20 digs. Olivia Scott (Willoughby) added 21 assists.

McKenzie Kovach (Mentor) led Lakeland in digs with 25 while Amanda Hult (Willoughby) added 14 digs in the loss.

Lakeland had 14 kills in the first set and the Lakers won the opening set 25-22 but that would be the last bit of success in the opening match.

Henry Ford 3 – Lakeland 1

After falling behind 2-0, Lakeland rallied in the third set for a 25-18 victory to force a fourth set but Henry Ford recovered to win the fourth to seal the victory.

Smart led the Lakers with 24 kills and added 17 digs. Scott dished out 25 assists while Daubenmire added 13 digs while Kovach led Lakeland with 19 digs.

Lakeland lost the first two sets but played much better in the third set and hit for a .130 percentage. The Lakers claimed the third 25-18 to force a fourth set. Henry Ford claimed the fourth set 25-19 to seal the victory.

Lakeland will wrap up the final day of the 2018 Raider Challenge on Sunday, Sept. 30. The Lakers will begin the day against Schoolcraft College at 9 a.m. and finish with St. Clair County Community College at 1 p.m.
