Lakeland sweeps Schoolcraft to open day at 2018 Raider Challenge

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Lakeland volleyball picked up a big 3-0 win over Schoolcraft College to open Sunday at the 2018 Raider Challenge.

The Lakers beat Schoolcraft 25-16, 25-19 and 25-19 to open the day and then followed that with a 3-1 loss at the hands of St. Clair County Community College by the score of 16-25, 25-16, 25-21 and 25-21.

With the split of matches, Lakeland's overall record moves to 4-16 and its Ohio Community College Athletic Conference record stays at 2-6.

Lakeland 3 – Schoolcraft 0

Lakeland broke a three-match losing streak with a 3-0 sweep over Schoolcraft to open the day.

Morgan Smart (Perry) led Lakeland with 13 kills while Erynn Daubenmire (Eastlake) also reached double figures with 10 kills. Olivia Scott (Willoughby) dished out 23 assists while McKenzie Kovach (Mentor) led the Lakers with 16 digs.

Lakeland started out with its most successful set, earning 14 kills and winning 25-18. The Lakers had only 10 kills in the second set but still claimed a 2-0 lead with a 25-19 win in the second set. Lakeland hit for its best percentage in the third and secured the sweep with a 25-19 win to break the losing streak.

St. Clair 3 – Lakeland 1

Just like the first time Lakeland and St. Clair played, the Lakers took the first set but then St. Clair bounced back to claim the following three sets for a 3-1 victory.

Smart and Daubenmire each had 15 kills to lead Lakeland while Smart added 15 digs. Scott tossed in 26 assists while Kovach added 16 digs in the loss.

Lakeland was efficient in the opening set by hitting 11 kills with only one error for a .333 hitting percentage as Lakeland took the first set 25-18. After that, St. Clair recovered to win the following three sets to claim victory.

Lakeland will get back into conference play with a road game at Cuyahoga Community College on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. Cuyahoga is 3-7 in the OCCAC and Lakeland is 2-6.
