The Lakeland volleyball team continued their road swing as they traveled to Lorain County tonight to face the Commodores. In a tightly contested match, the Lakers fell by score of 3-1 (16-25, 17-25, 25-21, 11-25). The Lakers found themselves battling to put it together for the first two games. There were times when the passing was very good, but then they did not have efficient kills. Later, when Lakeland started to hit their kills better, their passing accuracy dropped off to thwart any consistent momentum. The Lakers finally put it together in game 3 before droppong game 4 to end the match.
Taylor Williams-Stevens and Sydney Park each finished with 9 kills while Avrie Shenkel picked up 6 kills for the Lakers. Samantha Winter recorded 28 assists while Zoe Babnik picked up 16 digs and 3 aces. Abby Karasek added 4 kills while Alyssa Lino finished with 3 kills. Allison Hedrick picked up 3 digs and an ace while Estella Dotson chipped in 2 digs and an ace in the Laker loss.
Players of the Game: Avrie Shenkel - had several tremendous kills throughout the match.
Sydney Park - overall extremely high level of play with a great volleyball IQ.
Taylor Williams-Stevens - just becoming better and better at the middle - came up with some big blocks.
Zoe Babnik - played a great game with many outstanding digs and exemplifies the great leadership we need.
Watts' Word: "We have to become more consistent with our play in general. If we can maintain the aggression, energy, passion, love of the game and just tap into what Laker volleyball is for an entire match - we will come out on the winning side. I am still very confident with this team. We'll regroup and come back ready to go next week."
Next Up: The Lakers will have some time off as their next match is scheduled for Wednesday (9/25) against Cuyahoga CC. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm in Laker Gym.
