Lakers lose to Heartland and Lincoln Land, 15-9 and 14-2

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Lakeland baseball dropped games to Heartland Community College 15-9 and Lincoln Land Community College 14-2 Sunday afternoon.

With the pair of losses, Lakeland falls to 1-5 overall on the season.

Heartland 15 – Lakeland 9

Lakeland had more than enough offense but was unable to keep Heartland off the scoreboard as Heartland won 15-9 in the opening game.

Matt Detering had a big game at the plate as he belted a triple and three singles to bring in four runs. Zac Sabol and Tyler Knapp also had an RBI in the game. Riley Grieco hit a double and scored a run in the loss.

Lakeland did jump on Heartland first as Detering hit an RBI single in the opening inning to take a 1-0 Lakeland lead. Heartland did score 11 unanswered runs to take an 11-1 lead.

Detering did bring in another run in the sixth while Sabol also had an RBI single to get Lakeland within 11-3. Heartland added a single run in the seventh for a 12-3 lead.

Detering brought in two runs with a single to right in the bottom of the seven to get within 12-5. Max Von Gemmingen scored the sixth run in a wild pitch. Knapp brought in a run with a ground out to short to get within 12-7. Sabol was able to score on a wild pitch to get within 12-8 after seven innings.

Heartland scored one run in the top of the eighth and then Von Gemmingen scored in the bottom of the inning for Lakeland to get within 13-9. Unfortunately, that was the final run scored for Lakeland as Heartland scored two more in the ninth to win 15-9.

Lincoln Land 14 – Lakeland 2

Lakeland couldn't get as much offense going in the second game as Lincoln Land took advantage and won 14-2.

Cole Wajda hit a double and brought in a run while Seth France also brought in a run for the Lakers in the loss.

Lincoln Land scored three runs each in the first two innings and added a single run in the third to jump out to a 7-0 lead. Lakeland did score in the fifth and sixth innings but just single runs in each as Lincoln Land cruised to the 12-run victory.

Lakeland will next have a doubleheader against Mott Community College on Tuesday, March 12 beginning at 1 p.m.
