Lakeland ends losing streak after beating Owens in series finale, 8-5

PERRYSBURG, Ohio – Lakeland baseball dug out of an early four-run hole and scored enough to break a 13-game losing streak in the second game with an 8-5 victory over Owens Community College Sunday afternoon.

Lakeland lost the opening game of the doubleheader 6-5 to earn the split. After the split, Lakeland's overall record moves to 2-16 overall and 1-3 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference.

Owens 6 – Lakeland 5

Lakeland scored all five of its runs in the first two innings and held a 5-2 lead but was unable to hold on as Owens earned a 6-5 come-from-behind victory to open the doubleheader.

Mike Zueli hit a double and brought in two runs while Brendon Perez hit a double and a single and had an RBI. Zac Sabol earned two singles in the loss.

Lakeland scored three in the first and held a 3-1 lead after one and then two more in the second and held a 5-2 lead after two. Unfortunately, Lakeland would not score any more runs after the second inning.

Owens scored one in the third and two in the fourth to tie the game at 5-5. Owens scored the go-ahead run in the sixth and Lakeland was unable to score in the seventh as Owens held on for the win.

Lakeland 8 – Owens 5

Lakeland dug itself an early four-run hole but was able to get out and take the lead and hold on for an 8-5 victory over Owens to break a 13-game losing streak.

Tony Miller hit a pair of singles and brought in three runs. Zeuli hit a single and brought in a pair of runs. Perez, Matt Detering and Max Von Gemmingen each had an RBI in the win.

Calvin Andringa bounced back from a rough start and pitched six innings and allowed just five runs while striking out five in the win. Tyler Cerjan picked up the save when he entered the seventh with one man on and didn't allow a run to score to seal the victory.

Owens scored four in the first inning but Lakeland got going offensively in the second inning. Kyle Espineli started the inning with a walk and then came in to score on a double by Von Gemmingen to center to get within 4-1.

Miller followed with a two-run single to left to get within 4-3. Perez tied the game up at 4-4 with a single to left and then Detering followed with a sacrifice fly to give Lakeland a 5-4 lead.

The Lakers added to the lead in the third inning as Osvoldo Balbuena started the inning with a double and then scored on an RBI single to center by Miller for a 6-4 lead. Owens scored one in the fifth to get within 6-5.

Lakeland went after some insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning as Tyler Knapp and Balbuena walked and Zeuli drove both in with a two-run single to center for an 8-5 lead. Cerjan came on in the seventh to close out the victory for the Lakers.

Lakeland will next travel to face Potomac State College of WVU on Tuesday, March 26 for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
