SANDUSKY, Ohio – Lakeland baseball held a lead in both games but lost both games to Clark State Community College Monday afternoon at Sports Force Park by the scores of 9-3 and 10-6 in extra innings.
With the pair of losses, Lakeland falls to 2-20 overall and 1-5 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play. Clark State improved to 4-2 with the victories.
Clark State 9 – Lakeland 3
Lakeland came out scoring two runs in the first inning but could only score one more the rest of the way as Clark State won the opener 9-3.
Matt Detering hit a solo home run and added a single while scoring a run in the loss. Riley Grieco hit a double and a single and brought in a run while Tyler Knapp had an RBI and a single.
Lakeland held a 2-0 lead after the first inning and clung to a 2-1 lead after four. Clark State took a 3-2 lead in the fifth and tacked on six runs in the top of the seventh for a 9-2 lead.
Lakeland put up a fight in the bottom of the seventh as Detering hit a solo home run to make the score 9-3, which would end up as the final score.
Clark State 10 – Lakeland 6
Lakeland did much better offensively and forced extra innings but gave up five runs in the 10th inning and could not recover in a 10-6 loss to close the day.
Detering kept hitting the ball in the second game with three RBIs with a triple, two doubles and a single. Kyle Espineli hit a pair of doubles and brought in two runs. Knapp also had an RBI and a double. Mike Zeuli and Cole Wajda each hit a double in the loss.
Lakeland grabbed a 3-1 lead after one inning but Clark State battled to take a 5-3 lead in the middle in the sixth. The Lakers added two runs in the bottom of the sixth to essentially force extra innings after both teams failed to score in the seventh.
Clark State tacked on five runs in the 10th inning as Lakeland could only counter with a single run in the bottom of the 10th but it was not enough to avoid the loss.
Lakeland will host Clark State Community College for another doubleheader in Sandusky on Tuesday, April 2 beginning at 1 p.m.
