KIRTLAND, Ohio – Brendon Perez did allow a hit for Lakeland baseball in the final game of the series against Cuyahoga Community College to pick up a 12-2 victory in five innings Sunday afternoon.
Cuyahoga took the first game 14-6 to force a split. Following the split, Lakeland's overall record moves to 7-35 overall and 6-18 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play. Cuyahoga moved to 9-13 in conference.
Cuyahoga 14 – Lakeland 6
Lakeland held and early 5-4 lead in the middle of the fourth inning but Cuyahoga fired back by outscoring the Lakers 10-1 the rest of the way for a 14-6 victory to open the doubleheader.
Matt Detering hit a double and brought in a run while Brendon Perez also added a double and scored a run. Mike Zeuli, Cole Wajda, Osvoldo Balbuena and Collin Witherspoon each had an RBI in the loss.
Tyler Cerjan came on in relief for Lakeland and pitched 4 1-3 innings and allowed just two earned runs.
Lakeland 12 – Cuyahoga 2
Lakeland broke out with six runs in the first inning and received a solid pitching performance from Brendon Perez to beat Cuyahoga 12-2 in five innings to end the series.
Perez didn't allow a hit through five innings or an earned run while striking out six to pick up his second victory on the season.
Wajda hit a pair of doubles, scored twice and brought in two runs to help the Lakers. Zeuli and Tyler Knapp each had two RBIs while Detering, Kyle Espineli and Witherspoon each brought in a run for Lakeland.
Lakeland will play its final home series of the season beginning on Friday, May 3 at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader against Edison State Community College. Edison State is 15-9 in conference.
