Lakers sweep Commodores

The Lakers baseball team traveled to Crushers Stadium in Avon, OH today to play the Lorain County Community College Commodores in a doubleheader. The Lakers swept Lorain by the scores of 15-0 and 11-8 to improve their record to 4-6 (2-2) on the season. Adam Letson set the tone for Lakeland as he pitched the complete game (5 innings) and struck out 10 batters. The key for the Lakers offensively was a 12-run 3rd inning. The scoring started when Ben Sterrit forced in the first run on a bases-loaded walk. Seth Freeman followed with a bases-clearing triple and later scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Malakai Roberts had a 2-RBI single. After Jason Shenkel had an RBI walk, Tyronne Basbosa followed with a 2-RBI single to give the Lakers a 10-0 lead. In the 5th inning, Caden Gopalakrishna had a 2-RBI double and Carson Fellows later knocked him in with an RBI double to finish the scoring. Seth Freeman finished game 1 going 2-3 with 5 RBI's.

In game 2, Lakeland jumped to an 8-1 lead after scoring 6 runs in the 4th inning before holding on for the 11-8 victory. Lakeland scored the first run of the game when Kris Scandy scored on a passed ball. After Lorain knotted the score at 1 in the bottom of the 1st, Scandy gave the Lakers back with an RBI single in the bottom of the 2nd inning. The score stayed 2-1 in favor of the Lakers until the top of the 4th inning. In that inning, Ben Sterrit scored on a passed ball and then Kyle Zaluski had an RBI single. Later in the inning, both Jason Shenkel and Seth Freeman had 2-RBI singles. The Commodores scored 3 unearned runs in the bottom of the 4th to cut the score to 8-4. In the 6th inning, Lakeland would add 3 more as Zaluski hit a 2-run homer and Alex Ehinger forced in the Lakers final run with a bases-loaded walk. Jason Shenkel finished 3-5 with 2 RBI's while Kyle Zaluski finished 2-4 with 3 RBI's. Jack Atkins picked up the win pitching 5 innings and allowing 7 runs (4 earned) while allowing just 3 hits and striking out 6 batters. Malakai Roberts pitched a clean 7th inning to pick up the save. 

Next Up: Due to the weather, tomorrow's home game vs Lorain has been canceled. The Lakers and Commodores will try to play a DH on Monday at 1:00 pm in Crusher's Stadium. The Lakers would be the home team in those game.
