Baseball sweeps Purple Raiders

The Lakeland baseball team traveled to Mount Union today to face the JV Purple Raiders in non-league action and wasted little time in taking it to the hosts by beating the Purple Raiders 9-4 and 7-4. Lakeland jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Kaleb Corrin led the game off with a single before Ray Cowen and Wilfredo Ortiz worked walks to load the bases. Miguel Fuentes followed with a run scoring single to plate the Lakers first run. The Lakers second run was scored on a hard hit ball from Brayden Fellouzis that Mount's infield could not handle. Mount Union scored a run in the home half of the first inning before the Lakers blew the game open with 6 more runs in the top of the 2nd inning. Tony Hall started things with a walk before a Corrin single. Ortiz followed with an RBI-single before Nicholas Square ripped a 2 RBI-double.  After a Josiah Cuesta walk, Brayden Fellouzis blasted a 3-run home run to give the Lakers an 8-1 lead. The Lakers would add a run in the 6th inning on a James LaVigne walk as they cruised to the win.

Kaleb Corrin led Lakeland with 2 hits while Brayden Fellouzis hit a homer with 3 RBI's. Nicholas Square had a hit (2B) and 2 RBI's while James LaVigne, Wilfredo Ortiz, and Miguel Fuentes each had a hit and RBI. On the mound, Adam Salesky started and pitched 2 innings allowing 2 hits and an erned run. Casen Smith relieved and earned the win pitching 2 innings and allowing 2 hits while striking out 2 batters. Jack Argie followed with 2 innings allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits and Kaden Stout closed out the game pitching an inning and allowing 2 earned runs on 2 hits.

In game 2, Lakeland scored their first run in the first inning via the walk. After Ray Cowen reached on a fielder's choice, Miguel Fuentes, and Nicholas Square walked before Thomas Vokic forced in a run with an RBI-walk. Lakeland expanded their lead to 4-0 in the top of the second inning as they scored 3 more runs. James LaVigne hit a lead off single before Ray Cowen knocked him in with an RBI-double. Fuentes and Square then both followed with RBI-doubles. Mount scored a run in the bottom of the 2nd inning before Lakeland scored another run in the top of the 3rd inning. Brayden Fellouzis was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Tony Hall singled and LaVigne then sacrificed the runners up a base. Avery Perryman followed with an RBI-single to give the Lakers a 5-1 lead. Mount would score 3 runs over the next 2 innings as they took advantage of Lakeland errors to make the score 5-4. That score remained until the top of the 6th inning when the Lakers tacked on 2 insurance runs. LaVigne led off with a double and then scored on a Perryman double. Later in the inning, Perryman would score on a Cowen RBI-double allowing the Lakers to salt the game away.

Ray Cowen finished the game with 2 hits (2 doubles) and 2 RBI's while Avery Perryman also collected a pair of hits and 2 RBI's. James LaVigne picked up 2 hits (2B) while Miguel Fuentes added a double and RBI. Nicholas Square finished the game with a hit and RBI while Tony Hall picked up a hit. On the mound, Lucas Nichols started and pitched 2 innings allowing 1 unearned run while striking out 5 batters. Aaron De Oleo Rivas relieved and pitched 2 innings allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on two hits. Anthony Barbosa then earned the win pitching 2 innings allowing 1 hit and striking out 3 batters. Leo Alonso earned the save pitching the final inning and striking out 3 batters.

Next Up: The Lakers open OCCAC play on Friday (3/21) when they host the Clark State Eagles at Laker Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
