Baseball splits with Eagles

The Lakeland baseball team traveled to Clark State today and split a doubhleheader losing the first game 12-8 before bouncing back and winning game 2 by a score of 7-0. Trailing 3-0 in game 1, the Lakers got back into the game scoring 2 runs in the top of the 2nd inning. Miguel Fuentes started the inning with a leadoff single before scoring on an RBI-double from Nicholas Square. Square would later score on an RBI-single from Tony Hall. Trailing 4-2 going into the top of the 4th inning, Lakeland would score 6 runs as they took advantage of 3 walks and 2 hit batters to take an 8-4 lead. Hall would work a 1-out walk before advancing to 2nd on a fielders choice from Kaleb Corrin. Ray Cowen would then walk before Cody Crawford was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Wilfredo Ortiz then walked to force in a run before Miguel Fuentes was hit by a pitch forcing in another run. The Lakers would score another run on a ball hit by Square that couldn't be handled by the Eagles defense before Parker LaGreca hit a 2-RBI double. Unfortunately for the Lakers, they had a challenging 5th inning where they surrendered 7 runs before eventually falling in the game.

Parker LaGreca had a hit (2B) and 2 RBI's while Miguel Fuentes, Tony Hall, and Nicholas Square each had a hit and RBI. Brayden Fellouzis (2B) and Wilfredo Ortiz also had a hit in game 1. Ethan Duncan started on the mound and allowed 6 runs (4 earned) in 4 innings on 7 hits. Leo Alonso relieved and took the loss allowing 4 earned runs. Anthony Barbosa then pitched 2 innings and allowed 2 runs (0 earned) on 3 hits.

In game 2, Lakeland jumped out to the lead in the 2nd inning when they scored 4 runs. Wilfredo Ortiz started the inning with a walk. Later in the inning, James LaVigne singled and then Parker LaGreca walked to load the bases. Josiah Cuesta then hit a 2-RBI single for the Lakers. Kaleb Corrin would then hit an RBI-single before Ray Cowen followed with an RBI-single. The Lakers would tack on another run in the 6th inning. Nicholas Square started the inning with a walk before LaGreca singled to put runners on the corners. Cuesta then followed with a sac fly. Lakeland then scored their final 2 runs of the game in the top of the 7th inning. Wilfredo Ortiz singled to start the inning. Fuentes and Square were then both hit by pitches to load the bases. LaVigne followed with an RBI-single. Later in the inning, Cuesta followed with another sac fly to close out the Lakers scoring.

Kaleb Corrin and James LaVigne both had 2 hits and an RBI while Josiah Cuesta had a hit and 4 RBI's. Ray Cowen had a hit and RBI while Cody Crawford, Parker LaGreca, and Wilfredo Ortiz each picked up a hit for Lakeland. Jackson Smith earned the win pitching a complete game shutout allowing 3 hits while striking out 4 batters.

Next Up: The Lakers will travel to Cuyahoga CC on Friday (3/28) to face the Triceratops in OCCAC action. First pitch is scheduled for 4:15 pm.
