Baseball splits with Titans

The Lakeland baseball team traveled to Sports Force Park in Sandusky, OH to play the Terra State Titans today in OCCAC action. The Lakers and Titans split the doubleheader as the Titans won game one 7-6 in 9 innings while Lakeland took game 2 by a score of 3-2. In game 1, the Titans built a 6-0 lead scoring 2 runs in the 2nd, 3 in the 3rd, and 1 run in the 4th inning. Lakeland then exploded for 5 runs in the top of the 5th inning to make the score 6-5. Josiah Cuesta started the inning with a single. James LaVigne followed with an RBI-double before Ray Cowen drew a walk. Cody Crawford then hit an RBI-single before Miguel Fuentes knocked in a couple more runs with a single. After holding the Titans in the home half, the Lakers would tie the score at 6 in the top of the 6th inning. Cuesta worked a 1-out walk to start the rally. LaVigne would later follow with a 2-out walk before Cuesta scored on an RBI-single from Ray Cowen. The Lakers would threaten again in the top of the 7th inning after Fuentes doubled. Unfortunately, he would be stranded at 3rd base and the Lakers would eventually fall in 9 innings. 

Miguel Fuentes led the way offensively going 3-4 with 2 RBI's. James LaVigne collected 2 hits (2B) and an RBI while Ray Cowen finished with a hit and RBI. Parker LaGreca added a double while Josiah Cuesta picked up a single in the defeat. Jackson Smith opened and pitched a scoreless inning. Lucas Nichols followed with an inning allowing 2 earned runs. Adam Salesky then pitched 3 innings allowing 4 runs (3 earned). Leo Alonso pitched the next 3 shutout innings allowing 2 hits while striking out 5 batters. Casen Smith then relieved and took the hard-luck loss for the Lakers.

In game 2, the Titans would jump out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning. The score would remain 2-0 until the top of the 4th inning when the Lakers scored 3 runs to take a 3-2 lead. Cody Crawford led off with a single before Wilfredo Ortiz singled. Crawford and Ortiz later scored on an RBI-double from Miguel Fuentes. Josiah Cuesta then scored Fuentes with an RBI-single. From there, the Lakers pitching held the Titans at bay for the rest of the game as the Lakeland earned the win.  

Lakeland managed just 4 hits in the nightcap. Miguel Fuentes had a double and 2-RBI's while Josiah Cuesta added and RBI-single. Cody Crawford and Wilfredo Ortiz recorded the other hits for the Lakers.  Jack Argie started and earned the win as he pitched 4 innings allowing 2 runs while striking out 2 batters. Aaron De Oleo Rivas relieved and pitched a scoreless inning. Anthony Barbosa followed with a scoreless inning before Ethan Duncan picked up the save with a scoreless inning.  

Next Up: On Friday (4/11), the team will travel to Piqua, OH to face the Edison State Chargers. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
