The Lakeland baseball team traveled to Piqua, OH today to face the Edison State Chargers in OCCAC action. Lakeland used a consistent attack, solid defense, and good pitching to sweep the Chargers by the scores of 5-4 and 7-4. In game 1, The Chargers led 1-0 before the Lakers tied it with a run in the top of the 3rd inning. Josiah Cuesta started the inning with a leadoff single. Cuesta would then steal second base before later scoring on a sac fly from Brayden Fellouzis. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Chargers would retake the lead by scoring 3 runs for a 4-1 lead. Lakeland would answer right back scoring 4 runs in the top of the 4th inning to take the 5-4 lead. Parker LaGreca started the rally with a 1-out single. Aaron De Oleo Rivas and Cuesta then worked back-to-back walks to load the bases. Fellouzis followed by reaching on an error and driving in a run. With 2 outs in the inning, Ray Cowen would deliver the decisive blow as he ripped a bases clearing double for the Lakers. From there, Lakeland played solid defense and received quality pitching to shut the Chargers down and close out the game.
The Lakers scored 5 runs on 4 hits. Ray Cowen led the way with a double and 3 RBI's while Brayden Fellouzis also added 2 RBI's. Josiah Cuesta, Parker LaGreca, and James LaVigne each picked up hits for the Lakers. Jackson Smith started and allowed 3 earned runs in 2 innings. Anthony Barbosa relieved and picked up the win allowing 1 earned run in 2 innings. Casen Smith got a hold pitching 1.1 scoreless innings. Kaleb Corrin then closed the door as he earned the save pitching 1.2 scoreless innings to finish the game.
In game 2, the Chargers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the 1st inning. Again the Lakers answered immediately as they scored 4 runs in the top of the 2nd inning for a 4-2 lead. Miguel Fuentes and Parker LaGreca started the inning with back-to-back singles. Nicholas Square advanced the runners with a fielders choice before Josiah Cuesta scored Fuentes with an RBI-single. Later in the inning, Brayden Fellouzis ripped an RBI-single before James LaVigne hit an RBI-single. After holding the Chargers in the home half, Lakeland tacked on another run in the top of the 3rd inning to take a 5-2 lead. Ray Cowen hit a leadoff double and stole 3rd base. Later in the inning, Cowen scored on an RBI-groundout from Fuentes. That score would remain until the Charges scored a run in the bottom of the 6th inning to make the score 5-3. The Lakers would answer one more time scoring two runs in the top of the 7th inning. James LaVigne and Ray Cowen started the inning with singles before advancing a base on a Charger error. Fuentes would then knock in LaVigne with a sac fly before Parker LaGreca scored Cowen with an RBI-double. The Lakers then closed out the game to secure the sweep.
Parker LaGreca, Ray Cowen, and James LaVigne each recorded 2 hits in the nightcap. Both LaGreca and Cowen doubled and added an RBI. Miguel Fuentes had a hit and 2 RBI's while Brayden Fellouzis, and Josiah Cuesta each picked up a hit and RBI. On the mound, Lucas Nichols started and pitched 3 innings allowing 2 runs (1 earned). Aaron De Oleo Rivas relieved and pitched 4 innings allowing 2 earned runs while picking up the win.
Next Up: The Lakers games against the Edison State Chargers have been cancelled for Saturday (4/12) due to poor field conditions. The Lakers are scheduled to play host to the Terra State Titans on Tuesday (4/15). First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
