Lakers end losing streak with double overtime victory over Columbus State, 115-104

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Lakeland Community College men's basketball made a comeback in the second half and finished off that comeback in double overtime to beat Columbus State Community College 115-104 Wednesday night to end an eight-game losing streak.

With the much-needed victory, the Lakers improved to 2-10 overall and 1-2 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play.

Trey Granger put together his best game of the season with 28 points behind 11-of-15 shooting and added 10 rebounds to earn a double-double. Aaron Pate was close behind with 25 points and he also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Ty Howard scored 22 and had eight rebounds while Jeramie Burge finished with 16 points and Chandler Fointno finished up with 12 points in the victory.

Lakeland finished the game strong but the first half was forgettable as the Lakers allowed Columbus State to shoot a blistering 58.5 percent from the field as the Cougars led 51-36 at halftime. Granger scored 13 in the first while Howard earned 10 but the Lakers dug themselves a hole after 20 minutes.

Lakeland made it much more difficult for Columbus State to score in the second half and allowed the home team only 36 points in the second half. Granger scored 12 points in the second half and the Lakers tied the game and had the ball with 20 seconds left in regulation. Lakeland was unable to score in that final possession as Columbus State forced overtime.

The first overtime period was not enough to separate the two teams as both Lakeland and Columbus State scored 10 points to head to the second overtime tied 97-97.

The second overtime is where Lakeland turned up the defense and forced five crucial turnovers and scored easy buckets on those turnovers. Pate scored nine points in the second overtime and that helped the Lakers secure the nine-point victory.

Lakeland will be back home on Saturday, Jan. 13 for a game against Edison Community College at 3 p.m.
