The Lakeland men's basketball team traveled to Jamestown tonight to face the Jayhawks in non-league action. In a tightly contested game, the Lakers swept the season series by taking the game 87-83. The Lakers and Jayhawks battled back-and-forth with each other for the first 15 minutes of the first half. Trailing 29-27, Devin Belle drained a 3-pointer to put the Lakers ahead 30-29 with 5:25 to play in the half. On the Jayhawks next possession, Belle stole the ball and scored a layup to put the Lakers up 32-29. Both teams then missed shots before Amarion Glenn hit a jump shot on an assist from Ben Hamilton to grow the lead to 34-29. Following a Jayhawk basket, Raphael Sylver drained a 3-pointer on another Hamilton assist. Following a Jayhawk miss, Ben Hamilton connected on a 3-pointer on an assist from Adam Williams. Following a Jayhawk foul, Adam Williams stepped to the line and made two feee throws to give the Lakers a 42-31 lead. The Jayhawks then turned the ball over and Williams scored on a layup for a 44-31 lead with 1:11 to play in the half. Following a Jayhawk missed free throw, Devin Belle hit another 3-pointer to send the Lakers into the break with a 47-31 lead.
In the second half, Aaron Ward scored a pair of layups to give the Lakers a 20 point 51-31 lead a minute into the period. Lakeland would maintain a 17-20 point lead until there was about 7 minutes left in the period. The Lakers would then committ a couple of turnovers and miss some shots allowing the Jayhawks to cut the lead to 10 points with about 4:30 to play. The teams would then trade baskets and the Lakers maintained the 10 point advantage until their was under 1 minute to play. Kaleb Wanamaker connected on a pair of free throws in the last minute to help close out the Laker win.
Lakeland had a very balanced scoring attack and 3 playeres finished in double digits. Aaron Ward finished with a team high 23 point on 11-14 shooting from the field. Ward also added 6 rebounds. Devin Belle finished with 19 points and 5 rebounds while Kaleb Wanamaker recorded 10 points, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds. Adam Williams picked up 9 points and 4 assists while Raphael Sylver added 7 points in the win. Brandon Moore finished his night with 6 points and 7 rebounds while Ben Hamilton chipped in 6 points and 3 boards. Amarion Glenn picked up 4 points while Keenan Hughes added 3 points for the Lakers.
Next Up: The Lakers will get back into OCCAC play when they travel to Owens Commuity College on Saturday (1/25) to face the Express. Tipoff is scheduled for 11:00 am.
