Lakers Fall to Red Hawks in Double Overtime

Kirtland, Ohio – The Lakeland Community College Lakers played their second game in as many days on Sunday (August 28th) as they hosted Lake Michigan.  The Lakers fell in heart breaking fashion as the Red Hawks scored a golden goal in double overtime.

The first half was a defensive battle in which both teams were able to maintain a shutout.  The Lakers had three shots on goal in the first half, but were unable to convert their opportunities.  The Red Hawks outshot the Lakers 5-3 in the first half, and Lakeland goalie Angel Alvarez (Las Vegas, Nevada / Rancho High School) made five first half saves.

The second half was a much more offensive game in which both teams had numerous opportunities to win the match.  Joseph Tamba (Cleveland, Ohio / S.D.A) and Esteban Tapia (Quito, Ecuador / Euclid) had the best opportunities for Lakeland in the second half but were unsuccessful in finding the back of the net.  Regular time ended with the match all square at 0-0 and the game continued into overtime.

The first overtime period was uneventful, and the game continued into the second overtime.  In the second overtime Ivan Matkovic (Mentor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) won the ball for Lakeland in the offensive half of the field and ripped a shot from 25 yards out only to have it hit the post and bounce out.  Shortly after the Matkovic shot, Gustavo Santana scored the game winner for the Red Hawks, as Lake Michigan won 1-0 in double overtime.

Lakeland will return to action Wednesday (September 7th) when they travel to take on Lorain Community College at 4 P.M.
