Lakers shut out Lake Michigan, 4-0

KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland men's soccer kept Lake Michigan College out of its goal and showed some offense in a 4-0 victory Saturday afternoon in a Region XII match.

With the win, Lakeland improves to 4-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in Region XII play.

Kobie Gooding-Meade (Toronto, Ontario) scored two goals in the second half to lead the way. Williams Batres (Cleveland) scored a goal and added an assist. Ugochukwu MacAustin Nneji (Lagos, Nigeria) scored the third goal for the Lakers.

David Turner (Eastlake) added two assists in the win while Josue Gomez-Villegas (Perry) added an assist.

Jacob Pereira Granato (Toronto, Ontario) made six saves and did not allow a goal in the shutout victory to improve to 3-2-2 as a keeper.

Turner helped to set up the first goal in the seventh minute as he passed near the corner to the head of Batres for a 1-0 lead that would hold up until halftime.

The game opened up for Lakeland in the second half as Turner set up another goal by finding Gooding-Meade in the 60th minute for a 2-0 lead.

Nneji came off the bench and put himself in position to score in the 69th minute after a pass from Batres for a 3-0 lead.

Gooding-Meade slammed the door shut on the game with his second goal in the 79th minute after a pass from Gomez-Villegas for a convincing 4-0 lead that would hold until the final whistle.

Lakeland will wrap up the weekend with a home game on Sunday, Sept. 23 against Muskegon Community College at 1 p.m. Muskegon beat Lakeland 2-1 on Aug. 26 as the Lakers will be looking to revenge.
