KIRTLAND, Ohio – Kobie Gooding-Meade (Toronto, Ontario) buried a penalty kick goal in the 77th minute to help Lakeland men's soccer beat Lake Michigan College 3-2 in the NJCAA Region XII Division I quarterfinal Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, the Lakers advance to face Muskegon Community College in the semifinals on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 2:30 p.m. in Livonia, Mich. Lakeland improved to 6-10-4 overall after beating Lake Michigan.
Gooding-Meade picked up the game-winning goal on the penalty kick and added an assist in the win. Uri-Malcolm Young (Toronto, Ontario) also scored a goal and added an assist. Cole Clausen (Conneaut) scored the other goal for the Lakers.
The game did not start the way Lakeland would have wanted as Lake Michigan was awarded a penalty kick in the 19th minute and scored for a 1-0 lead.
Young was able to tie the game up at 1-1 three minutes later as he took a pass from Gooding-Meade and scored.
Clausen helped the Lakers take the lead before halftime as he took a pass from Young right in front of the goal and scored for a 2-1 lead in the 42nd minute for a score that would hold up until halftime.
Lakeland was hurt by an own goal in the 66th minute that tied the game at 2-2 but the Lakers took advantage of a handball call inside the box for a penalty. Gooding-Meade buried the penalty into the net for a 3-2 lead in the 77th minute that would hold up until the final whistle.
