The Lakeland men's soccer team played host to Jackson College today and dropped a 5-3 decision to the Jets. Lakeland put themselves in a hole early as they gave up 2 goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. At the 15 minute mark, Omar Inga halved the deficit as he scored a nice goal on an assist from Alex Orozco. Just when it looked like the Lakers were back in the game and ready to take over, they gave up a goal on a nice crossing pass from the Jets. The Lakers went into the break trailing 3-1.
In the second half, Lakeland came out early and controlled the possession game. The Jets were able to stifle the Lakers offensively though and Lakeland struggled to get quality shots. The Jets then took advantage of a defensive miscue to put them up 4-1 at the 60 minute mark. The Lakers contined to battle though as they cut the deficit to 4-2 just 4 minutes later. On the goal, Carmen Ningler-Farone made a nice feed to Alex Orozco who netted the goal. The Lakers again picked up the pressure and carried much of the play until the Jets would take advantage of another defensive miscue on a cross at the 70 minute mark. A couple of minutes later, the Lakers answered as Omar Inga split the defense with a pass and Byron Perez ripped a shot into the upper left corner. Unfortunately for the Lakers, that was as close as they would get in the defeat.
Till Oppermann was credited with 7 saves for the Lakers.
Ty's Talk: "Today was a tough loss for us. I was happy with our ability to possess the ball thru the midfield, but we just had difficulty breaking thru the final 1/3. We have to put this one behind us quickly as we have a difficult challenge coming up on Friday."
Next Up: The Lakers will have a quick turn around as they travel to St. Clair County CC on Friday (10/18) to face the Skippers in Region XII action. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 6:00 pm.
