Lakers softball fall in season opener

The Lady Lakers traveled to Patrick Henry Community College on Saturday to take on the Patriots. Unfortunately for the Lakers, they dropped both ends of the doubleheader by the scores of 8-7 and 7-3. The Lakers are now 0-2 on the season. Despite the losses, it was a positive day for Lakeland. in their first day outside on a field, they faced a team that has already played 12 games this spring, and so were a bit ahead in game readiness. The Lakers certainly had their opportunities in game 1 and held a 7-3 lead going into the bottom of the 7th inning. Unfortunately, the Lakers were unable to close the door in the final frame. Mia Cipriano had a 2-run homer while Casey McHugh, Tatianna Matuz, and Madison Tatka each collected 2 hits in the opener.  Megan Wallace took the loss on the mound hurling 6.1 innings and allowing 8 runs (6 earned) and 8 hits.

The Lakers started off quickly in game 2 and held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the 3rd inning. Unfortunately for the Lakers, the Patriots scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd and then were able to close out the game. Lindsey Fergus and Tatka each collected a double and RBI for the Lakers. Bailey Cravens added 2 hits and an RBI while also pitching the last 3 innings allowing 2 earned runs. Georgia Biggs started on the mound and took the loss hurling 3 innings and allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits.

Morganti Mentions: "This early in the season we need to learn to finish a game.  Megan gave us a chance to win game 1, but we needed to make a few more plays behind her. We hit the ball well. Seven runs should be enough for us to win. In game 2 we had a good start, but we stopped playing with energy and didn't have many good at-bats.  We're happy to get outside and play. Patrick Henry just had more game experience already. No excuses, though. We got better today."

Next Up: The Lakers will be at Surry Community College today to play in a noon doubleheader.
