Lakers softball sweeps Commodores

The Lady Lakers softball team played host to the Lorain County Commodores yesterday and came away with two wins by the scores of 12-5 and 8-0. With the victories, the Lakers upped their record to 8-5-1 (8-3-1).  Game one started slow for the Lakers and they found themselves in a 5-1 deficit before they started to get going.  Once they started hitting though, they exploded as they scored 3 in the 4th and 1 in the 5th to tie the score before exploding for 7 unanswered runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. In that inning, Megan Wallace led off with a double and later scored on a Casey McHugh double. Lindsey Fergus then stepped up and plated McHugh with an RBI single. Later in the inning, Bailey Cravens singled home Fergus. Mia Cipriano followed with a double before Madison Tatka followed with a 3-run home run to blow the game open. Mia Cipriano and Madison Tatka each led the way with 3 hits apiece in game one. Casey McHugh also added a home run as she collected 2 hits and 3 RBI's. Gina Grandini, Megan Wallace, Georgia Biggs, and Madison Tatka each collected 2 hits for the Lakers. Megan Wallace started on the mound and hurled four innings allowing 5 runs (2 earned) in getting a no-decision. Georgia Biggs relieved and picked up the win pitching 3 innings of shut-out ball while striking out 3 batters.

In game two, Lakeland had a 15 hit effort and an explosive 6-run 3rd innng that keyed the victory. In the 3rd inning, Casey McHugh led off with a triple to right-center field. She scored on a triple to right field by Lindsey Fergus. Tatianna Matuz then stepped to the plate and hit an RBI single scoring Fergus. Two batters later, Mia Cipriano hit Lakerland's third triple of the inning to score Matuz. She later scored on an RBI double from Madison Tatka. From there, the Lakers cruised the rest of the game. Lindsey Fergus finished game two with 3 hits and 2 RBI's. Casey McHugh, Gina Grandini, Mia Cipriano, and Tatka each picked up 2 hits in the win. Madison Tatka pitched the complete game shutout (6 innings, 4 hits, and 4 strikeouts) to pick up the win.

Morganti Mentions: "We got off to a little bit of a slow start, but we were able to hang in there and battle back which was nice to see. In game two, that big 3rd inning allowed us to just settle in. Georgia and Madison pitched very well and our team swung the bats well. We have some tough games coming up and we are looking forward to the challenge."

Next Up: The Lakers are scheduled to play Bryant & Stratton on Friday at Lakeland.  B&S will be slated as the home team and the games will start at 3:30. On Saturday, the Lakers will again face the Bobcats at 1pm. On Saturday, the Lakers will be deemed the home team.
