Lakers softball punches ticket to postseason as #1 seed from Ohio

The Lady Lakers softball team played host to the Clark State Eagles to complete a game from April 4th and then play a traditional DH. The Lakers swept the Eagles by the scores of 10-9, 8-1, and 10-2. With the wins, Lakeland finishes its regular season with a 15-8-1 (15-5-1) record. In the completion game, the Lakers were in the top of the 5th trailing 9-5 to start the game. In the 5th inning, Georgia Biggs reached by a walk and then Samantha Toke followed with an infield hit. After there was one out, Lindsey Fergus hit an RBI double scoring Biggs. Tatianna Matuz was then walked before Mia Cipriano stepped to the plate and delivered a 2 run single. After holding the Eagles in the bottom of the 5th inning, the Lakers tied it in the top of the 6th inning. Bailey Cravens led off with a single and advanced to second on a Madison Tatka fielder's choice. Megan Wallace would follow with a single before Cravens scampered home on an Eagle miscue. The Lakers took the lead in the top of the 7th when Lindsey Fergus led off with a single and then Tatianna Matuz followed with a double to put the runners on 2nd and 3rd.  With one out, Gina Grandini delivered the run-scoring sacrifice fly to center field to give the Lakers the lead and eventually the game. Lakeland had 16 hits in the game. Mia Cipriano went 3-4, with 3 RBI's, and scored a run. Lindsey Fergus also picked up 3 hits, 2 runs, and an RBI for the Lakers.  Bailey Cravens, Tatianna Matuz, and Samantha Toke each recorded 2 hits in the victory. Madison Tatka came on and pitched 3 innings for the Lakers to pick up the win while allowing 3 hits and striking out 6 batters. 

In game one of the doubleheader, Bailey Cravens led the way as she pitched a complete game allowing 1 unearned run on 5 hits while striking out 6 batters. Cravens was also a perfect 3-3 at the plate as she hit 3 singles and recorded 2 RBI's. Lakeland wasted little time getting going as they scored 2 runs in the home half of the 1st inning. Casey McHugh led off with a double and later scored on a 2-out double from Mia Cipriano. Bailey Cravens would knock Cipriano in with an RBI single. The Eagles would score an unearned run in the top of the 2nd inning and then Lakeland would open it up by scoring 4 runs in the 3rd inning. Lindsey Fergus got the inning going with a lead-off double.  Fergus would score on a Cipriano fielder's choice. Cravens would get things going again with a single. Madison Tatka followed with a single before Gina Grandini was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Megan Wallace then hit a ball to right-center that would go off the fielder's glove allowing the bases to clear. The Lakers would add two more runs in the 4th inning. McHugh led off with a single and then would get put out at 2nd base on a Lindsey Fergus fielder's choice. Mia Cipriano followed with a laser RBI double to score Fergus. Bailey Cravens then stepped to the plate and delivered another RBI single to close out the scoring for the Lakers. Lakeland collected 11 hits in the game as Cravens had 3 hits while both Mia Cipriano and Casey McHugh each added 2 hits for the Lakers.

In the nightcap, the Lakers wasted little time in jumping out to the lead. in the bottom of the 1st inning, Casey McHugh and Lindsey Fergus started the rally with consecutive singles. With 2 outs, Bailey Cravens would draw a walk before Madison Tatka followed with a 2-run double. Gina Grandini then singled allowing Cravens to score. After the Eagles cut the lead to 3-2, Lakeland would blow the game open scoring 4 runs in he 4th inning. With 1 out, Megan Wallace and Samantha Toke would hit consecutive singles. Casey McHugh drew a 4 pitch walk and then Lindsey Fergus would draw a walk and an RBI. Tatianna Matuz followed with a 2-run double to left-center field. Fergus would later score on a wild pitch. The Lakers would walk it off by scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. Madison Tatka started things off with a double. With 2 outs, Toke would draw a walk and steal 2nd base. Casey McHugh followed with a rope to left-center that allowed 2 runs to score. McHugh advanced to second on the throw home. Lindsey Fergus finished off the Eagles with a double to right field that allowed the Lakers to run-rule the Eagles. 

Megan Wallace picked up the victory pitching 5 innings and allowing 1 hit and 2 earned runs while striking out 10 batters. Lindsey Fergus went 3-3 with 3 RBI's and 2 runs scored. Madison Tatka finished with 2 hits, 2 RBI's, and 1 run scored. Casey McHugh picked up a hit, 2 RBI's, and scored 3 times.

Next Up:  The Lakers have qualified as the #1 seed in Division II out of Ohio. They will play on Thursday in Michigan. The game time and opponent are to be announced.
