The Lakeland's women's basketball team continued their road trip on Wednesday and beat the Commodores from Lorain County Community College 88-51. The Lakers improved their overall record to 5-1 and 1-0 in conference play. The Lakers started quick and took a 24-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and led by 30 at the half, 50-20. Lakeland controlled the boards throughout and finished with 58 points in the paint. After the break, the Lakers coasted some and so the tide turned in the 3rd quarter - losing the battle of the quarter 20-17. In the 4th quarter, they picked their play back up and finished the quarter with a 21-13 advantage.
Leading the way for the Lakers was freshman Gianna Pegoraro as she finished with 22 points on 8-12 shooting from the field. Freshman Rayonna Peterson also had a dominant game as she scored 17 points and had a career high 20 rebounds. Makayla Cooper scored 14 points for the Lakers while sophomore Julie Hajdu added 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Gardy's Gab: "I really like the way we started the game. We had a lot of energy and played strong defense. Unfortunately, in the second half we came out sluggish. We were up big and sat back a bit. That's something we will need to improve on - a consistent effort throughout. We were able to pick it back up in the 4th quarter - so that was good to see. In general, they played hard and I am proud of their overall play so far."
Next up: The Lakers play the final game of their four game road trip this Saturday as they travel to Hocking College to take on the Hawks in a 1 pm tilt. Lakeland returns home on Tuesday, 11/26, for a 5:30 tip against the Mercyhurst NE Saints. Admission is free.
