The Lakeland women's basketball team played host to the Clark State Eagles on Saturday and came away with a convincing 78-58 victory, With the win the Lakers improved their record to 9-1 (3-0).  The game started fast for the Lakers as they jumped out to a 10-0 lead and then never looked back. Julie Hajdu and Rayonna Peterson led the way for the Lakers in the first quarter as they combined to scored 15 of the 19 points. Dior Morgan was also pivotal to the Lakers early success as she played tenacious on ball defense to help set up many scoring opportunities. Throughout the game Lakeland was fairly consistent as they outscored the Eagles by 11 in the first half and then 9 in the second half. The big key for Lakeland in this game was their ability to beat Clark State on the glass.

 

Lakeland had four players reach double digits and seven players score overall in a balanced effort. Armani Jackson had a double double with 22 points and 17 rebounds while Peterson totaled 15 points and 9 rebounds. Hajdu finished with 14 points on 3-3 shooting from the arc while Makayla Cooper recorded 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists.

 

Gardy's Gab:  "We had a lot of good energy early and then really just coasted most of the rest of the way. Dior really stepped up early slowing their guard play with solid defense. Julie and Rayonna were really efficient in the first half; overall, a pretty solid effort where everyone played a part. It was good to play well and get two conference wins this week. We have a little break next week so that the team can focus on their finals. We will be looking to regroup and get ready to play Delta College at Delta - it will be good to see how we've progressed since they handed us our only defeat earlier this season."

 

Next up: The Lady Lakers will travel to Delta College in Saginaw Michigan this weekend to play in the Lynn Conway Classic. On Saturday, Lakeland will try to avenge an early season defeat with a 4 pm tip against host Delta College. On Sunday, Lakeland will play Schoolcraft College at 11 am in the second day of the Classic. The Lady Lakers will return home on Thursday, December 19, for their final game of the semester as they will take on the Skippers from St. Clair County CC at 5:30 pm. Admission is free.
