The Lakeland women's soccer team fell to the Muskegon Community College Jayhawks today 5-2 at Lost Nation Sports Park in Willoughby. With the loss, Lakeland drops to 10-3 and 6-3 in the conference. Lakeland started early as Molly Kunas put the Lakers ahead just 1:46 into game. Lakeland took a corner kick that led to a scramble in front of the Jayhawk net. During the scrum, Kunas was able to gain control and bury the shot past the Jayhawks netminder. Lakeland continued the pressure early as they made several nice combination passes. Unfortunately, they were not able to cash in. Muskegon attempted to chip and set-up through balls and were held at bay by the Lakers defense until they finally broke through at 21:59; burying a shot from about 15 yards out into the corner of the net. Muskegon immediately picked up the pressure and scored two more goals within the next 5 minutes to give them a 3-1 halftime lead. The Jayhawks increased their lead to 4-1 when they scored on a partial breakaway 13 minutes into the second half. The Laker's Denver Falz then cut the lead in half as she dribbled down the right side of the field and took a shot the went upper corner of the goal on the far side. Muskegon closed out the scoring at the 79 minute mark on a thru pass.
Sivik Sentiments: "I was pleased with our effort today. The team played hard and had some moments where we played exceptionally well. I liked our offensive sets - especially early - and defensively we played pretty well outside a brief stretch. We have already clinched our spot in the post-season and so we want to continue to work hard, improve, and stay healthy. We're looking forward to finishing up the regular season and playing in the post-season."
Next up: The Lady Lakers will host their final regular season game of the year on Friday, Oct. 25 against the Kellogg CC Bruins. The game time is 3pm and will be played at Laker Field at Lakeland Community College.
Lakeland has already qualified for the final four in Region XII that will be played in Muskegon, MI November 2-3. They finished in 3rd place in the Region and will most likely play Jackson Community College in the opening round.
