The Lakeland women's soccer team played host to the Lorain County Commodores today in their final home game of the season. Lorain County took advantage of some defensive miscues early in the first half to take a 3-0 lead into the break. In the second half, the Lakers had several scoring opportunities as they had 4 partial breakaways, hit a post, a crossbar, and missed a couple of open nets in trying to climb back into the game. Unfortunately, they were unable to break through until after Lorain County netted 3 more goals of their own. Lakeland finally broke through and scored the final goal of the game on a free kick from Josalyn Abrams. On the play, Abrams struck a ball about 35 yards out on goal. In traffic, the Lorain keeper was able to knock the ball away. Lily Schiemann was quick on the rebound as she gathered the ball and drilled a shot past the goalie to make the final score 6-1.
Lillyan Agostine was credited with 13 saves.
Players of the Game: Georgia Edwards, Carlin McNulty, and Josalyn Abrams
Mallon's Mentions: "We worked hard, but were just unable to minimize the mistakes. Everyone played a role, but Georgia Edwards had a great game creating offensive opportunities. Carlin McNulty did well in the midfield and Ryley Woodworth was strong in the back. Schiemann and Abrams of course did a great job in getting our goal. The score was a bit lopsided, but it was not indicative of the game. We had some chances to get ourselves into the game, but just fell short."
Next Up: The Lakers will play their final game of the year on Saturday (10/26) when they travel to Muskegon Community College for a 1:00 pm kickoff.
