Late Surge Lifts Lakers Past Chargers

KIRTLAND, Ohio – The Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team was victorious Saturday (Sept. 17) when they hosted Ohio Edison State Community College. With the win the Lakers improve to 6-5 overall on the season.    

The first set was a back and forth battle between the Lakers and Chargers. Neither team was able to gain more than a two point advantage at any point during the first set. Lakeland was able to grab the late lead and take the first set, 26-24.

The second set was dominated by the Lakers. Lakeland started the second set on a 7-0 run which forced an Edison timeout. The Lakers maintained their momentum to win the second frame, 25-14.

The Chargers started quickly in the third set, with a quick 4-0 run. After a two points by the Lakers, the Chargers, extended their lead to 8-2. Edison won the third set, 25-12.

In the fourth set, the Charges momentum carried over as they took an early lead. The Lakers rallied in the middle of the fourth set but were unable to climb all the way back, and fell, 25-17.

Lakeland managed to grab an early 7-3 lead in the fifth set to force a Chargers timeout. The Chargers rallied after the break and tied the game at 14-14. The Lakers scored the final two points of the matchto win the set, 16-14.  

Offensively Lakeland was led by Kayla Zarbock (Willoughby, Ohio / South) as she had a team high 16 kills in the match.  Marissa Salomon (Mentor, Ohio / Riverside) also pitched in as she had a career high 10 kills in the match. Salomon also added two solo blocks. Olivia Mancisio (Willoughby, Ohio / Kirtland) led the Lakers in blocks as she tallied four, while also adding eight kills. Defensively, Lakeland was led by Nicolette Waite (Willoughby, Ohio / South) as she had a game high 20 digs. 

Lakeland will return to the court Wednesday (Sept. 21) when they travel to take on Owens with the game starting at 6 p.m.
