Cincinnati State Surges Past Lakeland in Four Sets

KIRTLAND, Ohio – The Lakeland Community College Lakers were in action today as they were defeated by Cincinnati State in four sets. 

The match started when the Surge opened the game with an 8-2 run to force a Lakers timeout to halt the early momentum.  After both teams battled through the middle of the first set. Kayla Zarbock (Willoughby, Ohio / South) had three straight aces to cut the Cincinnati State lead to 21-18 which forced a Surge timeout.  Lakeland was unable to overcome the early deficit and fell 25-21 in the first set.

The second set started as a back and forth battle with the lead changing hands numerous times.  In the middle of the set the Surge opened up a 22-15 lead over the Lakers.  Cincinnati State finished the set strong and won the set, 25-17.

Lakeland started quickly in the third set as they jumped out to a 6-2 lead to open the frame.  The Lakers went on a big run in the middle of the set and took a 19-10 advantage.  Lakeland continued to dominate the set and won the third set, 25-14. 

The fourth set opened as a battle before the Surge opened an 8-5 advantage which forced a Lakeland timeout.  Cincinnati State outscored Lakeland 9-4 after the timeout to take a 17-9 advantage, which forced the Lakers to take their final timeout of the set.  The Surge won the fourth set, 25-18 and won the match in four sets.

The Lakers offense was led by Zarbock as she had a team high 12 kills in the match, and she also had three service aces.  Cary Morin (Burton, Ohio / Newbury) also pitched in on offense as she had 10 kills and two blocks. Defensively, the Lakers were led by Nicolette Waite (Willoughby, Ohio / South) as she tallied a game high 20 digs.  Brittney O'Hara (Sandusky, Ohio / Perkins) also had double-digit digs in the match with 10.    

Lakeland will be back in action tomorrow (Oct. 15) when they host Hocking College, with the match set to begin at 11 A.m.
