Lakeland loses in five-set thriller at No. 1 Owens, 3-2

PERRYSBURG, Ohio - No. 1 Owens Community College volleyball had not lost a single set in nine previous Ohio Community College Athletic Conference matches but Lakeland Community College took two sets from Owens in a 3-2 loss Wednesday eveving by the score 23-25, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22 and 15-7. 

With the loss, the Lakers falls to 11-13 overall and 6-4 in OCCAC play. 

Cary Morin led Lakeland with 20 kills and 17 digs. Krista Curtis added 17 kills and Iesha Niciu earned 14. Cailtin Cipriano dished out 41 assists while Brittney O'Hara led the Lakers with 33 digs. 

Lakeland came out strong in the opening set with 16 kills as a team and grabbed the opening set 25-23 behind six kills from Morin. Owens bounced back to tie the match at 1-1 with a 25-16 victory in the second set. 

The Lakers countered with a strong third set, again with 16 kills as a team. Curtis led the way for Lakeland with eight kills to take a 2-1 lead with a 25-23 victory in the third. Lakeland was unable to cash in on the lead as Owens won both the fourth and fifth sets to seal the 3-2 victory. 

Lakeland will be back home on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 11 a.m. for a conference match against Hocking College.
