Lakers volleyball drops opening twinbill

The Lady Lakers traveled to Owens Community College this weekend to participate in the Owens Tourney. The Lakers had a tough opening draw as they played Mott Community College before playing Schoolcraft College in the nightcap. In game one, Mott took control of the match and defeated Lakeland byt the scores of 10-25, 10-25, and 14-25. The Lakers young squad battled, but were just unable to overcome the more experienced Mott squad. For the Lakers, Kelly Ponzani led the way with 15 digs while Allison Seames collected 3 solo blocks.

Miozzi Mentions: "For the first game of the season (and against a very competitive team), we showed a lot of potential. We struggled with unforced errors and defending Mott's quick offense, but overall I was proud of the effort that the team showcased. I was happy to see that we progressed with each set. Now we just need to find the consistency."

In their second match, the Lakers showed better confidence and play, though still falling to the Ocelots 23-25, 17-25, 15-25. For Lakeland, Mia Eckliff led the team with 19 digs while Anna Lewis and Ari Brown each had 6 kills.

Miozzi Mentions: "After the tough opening loss against Mott, the girls came into this game focused and with great energy. We limited our unforced errors, improved our defense, and continued to progress each set. A few mental mistakes ultimately hurt us, but I was happy to see the girls play more aggressive and with more ball control. This weekend showed us what we need to focus on during practice and we are ready to work hard and keep improving."

Next up: The Lakers will travel to Jamestown, NY on Tuesday, Aug. 31 to face the Jamestown Community College Jayhawks. The match is scheduled to start at 6 pm.
