Lakers volleyball falls to Express

The Lakeland Lakers played host to the NJCAA DIII #2 ranked Owens Express on Wednesday and fell 3-0 (12-25, 14-25, 12-25). This was a difficult match throughout as the Express got off to a quick start in game 1 taking an early 5-1 lead. The Lakers battled back though and tied the match at 6 after 3 straight points from Adrienne DiPierro (Harvey HS).  After that, the Express went on a run to make it 16-8 before Mia Eckliffe (Mentor HS) served 3 straight to make it 16-11.  Owens then took charge rattling off 4 straight points to take command and eventually the game. Game 2 started off with both teams exchanging points. With the score tied at 3, Owens went on an 11-2 run and the Lakers were unable to recover. Game 3 was almost a copy of game 2 as again the score was tied 3-3 before the Express went on a 13-3 run. The Lakers got into a big hole early, but still battled; unfortunately, it was just too big to overcome.

Anna Lewis (Mentor HS) recorded 7 kills and 7 blocks while Kelly Ponzani (Wickliffe HS) added 10 digs to lead the Lakers.

Miozzi Mentions: "Owens is a very athletic team that is well coached. We hung in there and gave a solid effort overall. I was pleased with the positive energy and effort from most of the team, but in particular, from Anna (Lewis) and Kelly (Ponzani). We need to keep working hard and stay together - we'll re-group and come out ready to play Saturday."

Next up: On Saturday (10/9)Lakeland will travel to Kent State-Tuscarawas for a tri-match. The Lakers will play the Commodores from Lorain County in a non-league match at 4pm followed by a 6pm tilt against Kent State Tusc.
