Lakers volleyball and Coach Watts sail to 1st victory!

The Lakeland volleyball team played host to the Jamestown Jayhawks tonight in non-league action at Laker Gym. Tonight was not only the Lakers first game of the season, but it was also Coach Khaliah Watts' first game as a head collegiate coach.  The Lakers cruised all night as they defeated the Jayhawks 3-0 with scores of 25-8, 25-17, and 25-19. In game 1, the Lakers jumped on the Jayhawks early as they took advantage of strong serves and dominating kills to run to the quick victory. Though the scores in games 2 and 3 were closer, the Lakers were able to play a balanced game with a total team effort as the games were never in jeopardy. The defensive effort by the Lakers was strong all night as they made several oustanding digs to keep plays alive. Those digs were then typically followed with nice passing and sets which allowed them to put the points, and the games, away.

The Lakers were led by Kaitlynn Minarik as she had an oustanding all-around night. Minarik finished the match with 7 kills, 7 aces, and 10 digs. Erica Merth was dominating at the net as she finished with 9 kills and 4 blocks. Astianna Coppes recorded 16 assists and 5 digs while Lindsey Fergus picked up a team high 12 digs during the contest.

Watts' Word: "I was very pleased with our effort and willingness to work through some adversity this evening. The team was really positive and supportive of each other - they really worked as a team. We need to continue to work on being more aggressive with our attack and playing a bit better out of the system. Overall though, I was very pleased."

On her first collegiate victory as head coach: "It was very exciting! I am very happy and looking forward to more."  Congratulations Coach Watts!

Next Up: The Lakers are back at it tomorrow night (8/23) as they travel to Kent State Tuscarawas to face the Golden Eagles in a 6:00 pm match.
