Lakers ready for 2023 fall sports season

As the 2023 season approaches, the Lakeland Community College men's soccer, women's soccer and women's volleyball teams are gearing up for what promises to be an exciting year of competition.

For the men's soccer team, the season kicks off Aug. 24, with a road match at Monroe Community College. The team will also visit Lorain Community College (Aug. 29) and Cuyahoga Community College (Sept. 1), before hosting its first home match Sept. 11 against Tri-C. Lakeland's 15-game schedule, which includes seven home dates, is available online HERE. The Lakers are coming off a successful 2022 campaign where the team finished with a 6-4 record under first-year head coach Tyson Mayer. The team advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) regional semifinals, before falling in double overtime to Schoolcraft College, 4-3.

The women's soccer team is equally fired up for the 2023 season, which is slated to start Aug. 19 at St. Clair County Community College. The schedule follows with trips to Lorain County Community College (Aug. 29) and Kellogg Community College (Sept. 1), before the first home match of the season Sept. 6 against Owens Community College. The team's 15-game schedule, which includes seven home dates, can be viewed HERE. Second year head coach Mark Mallon led the 2022 Lakers to a 6-6-1 record, including an impressive 4-2-1 mark at home. The team tallied four shutouts on the season, including a 7-0 win against Terra State on Sept. 7. The seven goals marked a season-high for the Lakers.

Finally, the women's volleyball team is looking forward to a strong 2023 season. Lakeland's season starts Aug. 22 with a home match against Jamestown Community College, followed by the team's first away match Aug. 23 at Kent State Tuscarawas. The Lakers first Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) contest of the season will take place Aug. 30 at Lorain County Community College. The team's 26-game schedule, which includes nine home contests, can be accessed HERE. The Lakers are being guided by first-year head coach, Khaliah Watts. She looks to continue the team's momentum with a second consecutive season of win improvement.
