Baseball sweeps Lorain

The Lakers baseball team traveled to Crusher's Stadium in Avon today to play the Lorain County Commodores. After earning a late inning 5-4 victory in game 1, the Lakers would explode for a 12-0 run-rule that included a combined no-hitter for the Lakers. In game 1, Lakeland would strike first in the top of the 1st inning. Cody Hejduk walked and stole 2nd base and then advanced to 3rd on a Seth Cervello fielder's choice. Hejduk would then score on a Rafael Nakandakari Alves fielder's choice. The Commodores would answer by scoring 2 runs in both the 1st and 2nd innings to take a 4-1 lead. In the top of the 3rd inning, Lakeland would score 2 more runs to cut the deficit to 4-3. Hejduk would again get things going by hitting a 1-out single. Cervello sterpped to the plate and doubled to put the runners on 2nd and 3rd. Alves continued his hot start as he then ripped a 2-RBI single. The game would remain tied until the top of the 7th inning. The Lakers, who have lost a couple of games this season in teams last at-bats, took advantage of the Commodores by scoring 2 runs to take the lead. Seth Cervello would get things going by hitting a 1-out single before stealing second base. Rafael Nakandakari Alves would then hit an RBI-single to tie the game. Alves would advance on a passed ball before scoring on a ball hit by Kyle Zaluski that the first baseman was unable to handle. Seth Cervello and Rafael Nakandakari Alves led the way for the Lakers as they both collected 2 hits. Caden Gopalakrishna, Cody Hejduk, and Stephen Osowski each picked up hits in the Lakers win. Michael Beckman started and pitched 2 innings allowing 4 runs on 3 hits. Seena Amani relieved and shut the Commodores down for 2 innings before Owen Mansfield closed it out to pick up the win as he pitched 3 innings and allowed no runs while striking out 4 batters.

Game 2 was highlighted by the combined no-hitter of Abe Bayus (2 innings) and Lenny Feckner (3 innings and the win). The two combined to hold the Commodores at bay while the Lakers scored some early runs before exploding for 9 runs in the 5th inning. Lakeland scored two runs in the second inning to get going. Kyle Zaluski singled and advanced to 3rd on a single (cather's interference) from Cody Crawford. Joey Elly followed by ripping a 2-RBI single to put the Lakers on the board. The Lakers would take advantage of Commodore miscues in the 3rd inning to plate another run before recording 6 singles, a triple (Zaluski), and 4 walks to put this game away.

Next Up: The Lakers will face the Commodores again tomorrow in a doubleheader to complete the 4 game set. It will be the home opener for the Lakers with the 1st pitch scheduled for 1:00 pm.
