Men's soccer tops Tri-C to punch postseason ticket

The Lakeland men's soccer team played the Cuyahoga Triceratops today in a region game at Laker Field. With a win, the Lakers would advance to the post-season. Lakeland left no doubt in a dominating effort against the Triceratops. Edgar Camarillo got the Lakers on the board as he netted his first goal of the night with 5 minutes to play in the first half. Though the Lakers possessed the ball and controlled play for most of the first half, they still only carried a 1-0 lead after the opening stanza. 

In the second half, the Lakers exploded early by scoring 3 goals in an 8 minute span to put the match away. Omani Leacock scored his first goal of the night 5 minutes into the second half. Three minutes later, Ali Albasar torched the Cuyahoga netminder to give the Lakers a commanding 3-0 lead. Four minutes later, Leacock would score again to essentially put this game on ice. Jesus Arellano picked up the assist. Edgar Camarillo would finish out the scoring with 15 minutes to play on Arellano's second assist of the match. 

Dominic Grobler made 6 saves in the shutout victory.

The 5-0 victory guaranteed the Lakers at least a .500 record as they finished the regular season with a 5-4 reord.

Coach Mayer commented, "I was pleased with the way we played today. We gave a strong effort and were able to control much of the game. Our team has been working hard and I'm excited to watch our development. A special thanks to our sophomores - they have really done a great job this year. I wish them luck and am confident they will be successful in the future."

Next Up: The Lakers have punched their ticket to the postseason and will face the top seeded Schoolcraft Ocelots on Saturday (10/29) at Morton Park in Marysville, MI. The tournament host is St. Clair County Community College. The match is scheduled for 11:00 am. The Lakers played the Ocelots on 10/1 and lost 3-0. Since that loss, Lakeland has gone on a tear winning 4 of their last 5 games.
