Lakers men's soccer falls to Ocelots in 2OT

The Lakeland men's soccer team played the NJCAA's 12 ranked Schoolcraft Ocelots today in the semi-finals of the Region XII men's soccer tournament hosted by St. Clair County Community College. Things didn't go well early for the Lakers as they fell behind 2-0 at the end of the first half of play. Lakeland started the match a little sluggish and Schoolcraft was able to take advantage. The Ocelots Mohammed Hammound scored both goals for Schoolcraft in the first half. Overall, neither team was able to gain much of an advantage in the opening half as Schoolcrat held a 2-0 lead in shots in goal and neither team earned a corner kick. Twelve minutes into the second half, the Ocelots took a 3-0 advantage on a goal by Alex Demorrow. After that goal, Lakeland's offense started to click as they scored their first goal less than 2 minutes later. Adan Tejada tallied the goal on an assist from Omani Leacock. Thirty seconds later, Julio Espinoza broke thru to cut the lead to one as he scored unassisted. The teams continued to battle until the Ocelots committed a foul in the box at the 68:31 mark. Lakeland's Omani Leacock stepped to the line and scored on the penalty kick to tie the game at 3. The teams continued to battle until the end of regulation with neither team able to break through. Schoolcraft edged the Lakers in shots on goal 12-6 in the second half and held a 4-1 advantage in corners despite the Lakers outscoring them 3-1.  In the first overtime, neither team was able to take advantage and they each recorded 1 shot on net. At the 101:20 mark of the second OT, Schoolcraft's Diego Ayala netted the final goal to lead the Ocelots to the win. 

For the game, Schoolcraft outshot the Lakers 17-7 and held a 4-1 advantage in corners. Lakeland's Dominic Grobler finished with 8 saves in the game. Coach Mayer commented, "Unfortunately, we got off to a slow start, but I was proud of the way we battled.  We worked hard and gave ourselves a chance for the win. Congratulations to Schoolcraft. They are a good team and well-coached. We wish them the best of luck with the rest of their season."
