Lakers softball drops one and then ties one

The Lady Lakers continued their spring break play down in Myrtle Beach and ended their day with a loss and a tie. In game one, the Lakers faced off against Delaware State Tech and suffered an 8-0 defeat. Delaware Tech scored 2 runs in the top of the first inning and the Lakers were unable to respond offensively. Lakeland managed three hits in the game as Catherine Heckman and Astianna Coppes both went 1-3 while Lily Seay went 1-2. Faith Hartman took the loss hurling 7 innings. She allowed 10 hits while striking out three batters.

In game 2, the Lakers came ready to play. They faced off against the Prairie State Pioneers in the nightcap. In the top of the 1st inning, Gina Grandini was hit by a pitch to start the game. Tatianna Matuz then stepped to the plate and crushed a 2-run homer to give the Lakers an early 2-0 lead. Astianna Coppes would later step to the plate and rip a single. Danna Kennedy would then drop a sacrifice bunt down to advance Coppes to 2nd. Megan Szczcinski would then hit a ball that the third baseman was unable to handle putting runners at the corners. Szczcinski would then steal second base, with the Pioneers catcher trying to throw her out. Instead, Szczcinski was safe and Coppes was able to score from third on the play.  The Pioneers would answer with 2 runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. In adverse weather conditions, the Pioneers scored on wild pitches, a walk, and an error.  The score would remain 3-2 Lakers until the bottom of the 4th inning when the Pioneers scored a run on a pair of hits. The Lakers would then start to bat in the top of the 5th innning. Tatianna Matuz would hit a leadoff double. Catherine Heckman would walk with the Pioneer pitcher mixing in 2 wild pitches allowing Matuz to score and the Lakers to take the lead. At that point, the game was called as the rain picked up. By rule, the score reverts back to the previous inning and so the Lakers came away with a tie. Tatianna Matuz finished game 2 going 1-2 with a home run and 2 RBI's (the double in the 5th gets wiped out by the rain). Astianna Coppes went 1-2 with a run scored. Lily Seay earned the tie pitching 4 innings and allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits while striking out 3 batters.

Next Up: The Lakers have an off day on Monday. They are scheduled to resume playing on Tuesday as they face Delaware Tech at 1:00 pm and then Concordia College (Texas) at 5:00 pm.
