Lakers softball falls to Hawks

The Lakeland Lakers made the long trip to Hocking College today to face off with the Hawks in a doubleheader. The Lakers dropped both ends losing game 1 by a score of 12-4 before dropping the nightcap 8-6. In game 1, the Hawks jumped out to an early lead and the Lakers were never able to recover. The Lakers did score 2 runs in the 3rd inning. Tatianna Matuz got things going with a double. Following an Astianna Coppes walk, Catherine Heckman hit an RBI single. Coppes would later score on a Kennedy Danna fielders choice. The Lakers would tack on two more runs in the 5th inning. Matuz and Coppes would hit back-to-back singles before Catherine Heckman moved the runners on a groundout. Danna would then pick up another RBI on a fielders choice. Megan Szczecinski followed with an RBI hit to plate the Lakers final run. Tatianna Matuz took the loss on the mound for the Lakers pitching 4 innings. Samantha Toke relieved and pitched an inning for the Lakers. Offensively, Matuz led the way for the Lakers going 3-3. Catherine Heckman picked up 2 hits while Kennedy Danna went 1-3 with 2 RBI's. Astianna Coppes and Samantha Toke picked up hits in the Lakers loss.

Game 2 saw the Lakers battle before coming up just short.The Lakers took the early lead scoring 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning, Gina Grandini walked and then Tatianna Matuz hit a fielders choice erasing Grandini. Astianna Coppes followed with a 2-run blast to stake the Lakers to the early lead. The Hawks would answer with a run in the home half of the first and then 4 more in the second. They would also tack on 2 more in the 4th before the Lakers fought back. In the top of the 5th inning, Coppes would lead off with a single. Catherine Heckman would then reach on an error before Kennedy Danna stepped to the plate and ripped a 3-run home run. The Hawks would answer with a run in the bottom of the 5th to give them an 8-5 lead. In the top of the 7th, the Lakers would continue to battle. Danna would hit a leadoff single and advance to second on a catcher's error. Reagan Hayes then delivered an RBI single to draw the Lakers closer at 8-6. Unfortunately for Lakeland, they would be unable to get any more hits and eventually fall to the Hawks. Kennedy Danna went 3-4 with 3 RBI's from the home run while also scoring 2 runs. Astianna Coppes went 2-4 with 2 RBI's from the home run while also scoring 2 runs. Reagan Hayes picked up 2 hits and an RBI for the Lakers while Samantha Toke also collected 2 hits. Autumn Fester and Lily Seay recorded hits in the loss. Lily Seay took the tough luck loss for the Lakers pitching a complete game.

Next Up: The Lakers are scheduled to travel to Clark State on Friday (4/28) where they will play the Eagles in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
