Lakers softball finish season with split against Eagles

The Lakeland softball team traveled to Clark State College today and earned a split against the Eagles. Lakeland dropped game 1 by a score of 14-8 before winning their final game of the season 7-5.  The Lakers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning in game 1. Kennedy Danna was hit by a pitch and then stole second base. Reagan Hayes followed with a walk before Megan Szczecinski hit an RBI-single. Samantha Toke was then hit by a pitch before Tatianna Matuz hit a 2-RBI single. Astianna Coppes then singled before Catherine Heckman hit a 2-RBI single. Later in the inning, Micaha Marbury hit an RBI-single. The Llakers then had a tough bottom of the 3rd where the Eagles plated 8 runs to take the lead. In the top of the 4th inning, Lakeland added another run to cut the score to 8-7. Tatianna Matuz doubled and advanced to third base on a passed ball. Astianna Coppes then drove her home with a sacrifice fly. The Eagles added another run in the bottom of the 4th before plating 5 in the 5th to take a commanding lead. The Lakers would score one more run in the 6th, but that would be it in game 1. In the 6th, Matuz singled and advanced on a Coppes fielders choice. Catherine Heckman then knocked in Matuz with an RBI-single. Offensively, Catherine Heckman went 3-4 with 3 RBI's and Tatianna Matuz finished 3-4 with 2 RBI's. Astianna Coppes picked up 2 hits and an RBI while Megan Szczecinski added 2 hits for the Lakers. Micaha Marbury added a hit and RBI. Lily Seay started the game on the mound and was removed with an injury. Samanatha Toke relieved and took the loss.

In game 2, the Lakers spotted the Eagles 2 runs before fighting back in the top of the 3rd inning. In the 3rd, Samantha Toke worked a 1 out walk. Gina Grandini follwed with a single before Tatianna Matuz ripped a 3-run home run. The Eagles fought back with 3 runs in the home half of the 3rd inning to regain a 5-3 lead. The Lakers continued to battle and chipped away by scoring a run in the top of the 4th inning. Reagan Hayes was hit by a pitch before Kennedy Danna singled. Both runners advanced on a passed ball. Hayes would later score on a Samantha Toke fielders choice. The Lakers would then hold the Eagles before taking a 7-5 lead in the top of the 5th inning scoring 3 runs. Tatianna Matuz and Astianna Coppes both singles to start the inning. Catherine Heckman would then hit an RBI-single to tie the game. Later in the inning, Reagan Hayes would hit a 2-RBI single to give the Lakers the lead and the eventual win. Tatianna Matuz finished 3-3 with 3 RBI's. Astianna Coppes picked up 2 hits for the Lakers while Reagan Hayes went 1-2 with 2 RBI's. Catherine Heckman added a hit and an RBI while Gina Grandini and Kennedy Danna each had a hit in the Laker victory. Tatianna Matuz pitched a complete game and earned the win on the mound for the Lakers.
