Softball falls short in wild doubleheader

The Lakers continued their Florida trip with a doubleheader Sunday afternoon. In game 1, Lakeland faced Lake Michigan and fell in a walk-off to the Red Hawks. Lakeland got off to a fast start as Carmen Alvarez hit a lead-off homer for a quick 1-0 lead. The Red Hawks would answer in the home half of the inning and the score would remain tied at 1 until the top of the 4th inning. The Red Hawks would plate 3 runs in the 4th and 2 in the 5th to take a 6-1 lead after 5 innings. Lakeland would fight back in the top of the 6th inning. Astianna Coppes would get it started by hitting a 1-out double. Coppes would score on an RBI-single from Abby Haydu. Midaliz Alvarez would single before both scored on a bases clearing triple from Reagan Hayes. In the bottom of the 6th innng, the Red Hawks would take advantage of defensive miscues to score 2 runs and grow their lead to 8-4 after 6 inings. Again, the Lakers would answer. With one out, Carmen Alvarez would get hit by a pitch and steal second base. Astianna Coppes would then stroke an RBI-double. Abby Haydu would then single before Midaliz Alvarez hit an RBI-single. Reagan Hayes would again deliver for the Lakers as she delivered a game tying 2-RBI single. Unfortunately for Lakeland, their defense would falter in the bottom of the 7th as the Red Hawks were able to put a runner in scoring position by an error and then plated the winning run with a walk-off single.  

Reagan Hayes fell a homer short of the cycle as she went 3-4 with 4 RBI's. Astianna Coppes also collected 3 hits (2B) and an RBI while Midaliz Alvarez added 3 hits and an RBI for the Lakers. Abby Haydu collected a pair of hits and an RBI while Carmen Alvarez homered. On the mound, Peyton Trick pitched 5 innings allowing 8 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits while striking out 4 batters. Leah Richter relieved and took the tough luck loss tossing 1.2 innings and allowing an unearned run.

In game 2, the Lakers would fall just short against the Triton College Trojans as they dropped a hard fought 11-10 decision. The home team Lakers, would allow a run in the 1st inning before answering in the 2nd inning. Midaliz Alvarez started the rally with a 1-out double. Peyton Trick would hit an RBI-single to tie the score after two innings. The Lakers would blank Triton in the top of the 3rd inning before taking charge by scoring 4 runs in the home half. Carmen Alvarez started by hitting another solo homerun. Astianna Coppes and Abby Haydu would both single before Midaliz alvarez walked to load the bases. Trick would follow with a 2-RBI single. Later in the inning, Reagan Hayes would plate another run with an RBI-single to give the Lakers a 5-1 lead after 3 innings. The Trojans would then score a run in the 4th and 6 in the 5th as they were able to string some hits together. Trailing 8-5 going into the bottom of the 6th inning, the Lakers answered back to tie the game. Lily Seay walked and was later followed by a 2-out single from Kennedy Danna. Astianna Coppes then stepped to the plate and clubbed a 3-run home run to tie the game at 8 after 6 innings. The Trojans answered right back scoring 3 runs in the top of the 7th inning with Lakeland having just one more chance to answer. Midaliz Alvarez got Lakeland going again with a double. Peyton Trick walked and Reagan Hayes singled to load the bases. With 2 outs, Carmen Alvarez hit a 2-RBI double bringing the Lakers within a run. Unfortunately, that is where the game ended as the Lakers took the hard-fought defeat.

Peyton Trick went 3-3 (2B) with 3 RBI's while Astianna Coppes went 2-4 with a homer and 3 RBI's. Carmen Alvarez collected 2 hits (2B, HR) with 3 RBI's while Midaliz Alvarez also had 2 hits (2-2B). Reagan Hayes finished the game with 2 hits and an RBI while Abby Haydu, Kennedy Danna, and Megan Szczecinski each picked up a hit for Lakeland. Lily Seay picked up the tough loss pitching 2 innngs and allowing 5 earned runs. Athena Stute pitched 1 inning allowing 2 earned runs. 

Next Up: The Lakers will follow an off-day on Monday with a doubleheader on Tuesday as they are scheduled to play Illinois Valley CC and Wisconsin Lutheran JV.
